PROTEST SAFE SPACES FOR BLACK PEOPLE

PROTEST – Friday 21 August 2026, 16:00–21:00

Last Friday 14 August 2026, a swimming afternoon for Black children and young people at the Volksbad had to be cancelled. Not because it was unlawful — but because of racist threats, hate emails and a coordinated media campaign that made it impossible to guarantee the kids' safety. Even though the Volksbad was previously successfully booked exclusively for numerous groups, when EOTO, an afro-disaporic organization tried to book a few hours for black youth, the reaction was different.

Safe spaces for Black youth are explicitly protected as a "positive measure" under Berlin's State Anti-Discrimination Act (LADG) and the federal AGG. But a right on paper means nothing if it can be bulldozed by threats and hate. That is exactly what happened here.

If this passes without response, it becomes a template: pressure, threaten, get minority events cancelled. Silence would confirm that it works.

We are calling a stationary protest in solidarity with Berlin's Black community and against the everyday anti-Black racism that made this event necessary in the first place. Show up. Bring signs. Bring friends. Let's make it clear that Black communities in Berlin do not stand alone — and that the right to create safe spaces is not up for negotiation.
